1. Knowing GOD (3)

And when My servants question you concerning Me, then truly I am near. I answer to the call of the suppliant when he calls on Me. (Q2:186)

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِي إِذَا دَعَانِي

Here we have the closeness of GOD expressed in terms of intimacy, immediacy, and responsiveness. There is no question here of knowing the words or speaking a particular language. And there is no need for an intermediary or personal substitute. If we call on someone else, of course, we have to wait, and wonder whether our prayer has been heard. But GOD’s answer must be something that anyone can understand – directly, in one’s heart.

AL-LAH the Most High says: “I am present at the thought my servant has of me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. (Sahihul-Bukhari, Book 97, Hadith 34)                                             

يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى أَنَا عِنْدَ ظَنِّ عَبْدِي بِي، وَأَنَا مَعَهُ إِذَا ذَكَرَنِي

Even when they concede its authenticity, modern-day literalist scholars find this hadith so uncomfortably close, and the wording so bold, that they feel the need to find a way to explain it away. What stronger statement could there be of GOD’s immanence, and what our condition must be to become aware of that? It is not that GOD comes and goes as we think of Him or not, but rather it is we who flicker on and off, coming to and going from Him as we remember or forget.

Truly by remembering AL-LAH do hearts become serene. (Q13:28)

أَلاَ بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

The tranquillity possessed by GOD takes its place in our hearts by remembering. And remembering anything can only occur as the result of a prior experience. We have known GOD, but that knowledge seems to be buried and forgotten. What exactly are we forgetting?
